This document provides good practice guidance on the use of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) for reduction of phosphorus in runoff from new developments. It sets out the necessary sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), deployed in ‘treatment trains’ to achieve phosphorus removal, particularly for sensitive receiving waters and nationally important nature conservation sites. It represents good practice surface water management through the use of SuDS and can be applied anywhere.

This document has been updated for three reasons:

  • There was a mathematical error that affected the figures provided for the capture and removal of dissolved phosphorus (DP) in Chapter 2, including Table 2.20.
  • The worked examples in Chapter 3 have been changed so that they are more closely aligned with the Natural England nutrient neutrality calculator.
  • The figures provided for floating wetlands have been updated to reflect the function of these devices.
